Okay, “The Saragossa Manuscript” is honestly one of the weirdest rides I’ve ever had with a movie. I went in expecting maybe some old adventure flick, but what I got was this wild labyrinth of stories inside stories — like, it never stops twisting! At one point you’re following a guy just trying to cross the mountains, and the next, it’s gypsies, haunted houses, ghosts, and who-knows-what-else, and it all starts looping back on itself. I kept trying to keep track, but after a while you just kind of give in and let the movie take you wherever it wants.
Some of the sets and costumes are just crazy good. There’s this trippy, dreamy vibe to everything, and it honestly looks gorgeous — even if half the time I didn’t really know what was going on. The main dude, Alphonse, just gets dragged from one surreal mess to another, and you never really know what’s real or just in his head.
But I gotta say, it’s long. Like, three hours long. I actually had to take a break, which I never do. It’s a lot, and I’m not sure I cared about all the characters by the end. Still, it’s totally unique. If you’re into strange, ambitious films that mess with your brain a bit, you kind of have to try this one at least once. Or maybe just watch it in chunks and come back when your head stops spinning.
